Slow play isn’t just frustrating; it impacts everyone’s enjoyment of the game. Maintaining a good pace is a fundamental part of golf etiquette and ensures a smooth, flowing experience for all players.
Why Slow Play Happens
Many factors contribute to slow play, often unconsciously. Common culprits include excessive pre-shot routines, searching for lost balls for too long, spending too much time on the green, indecision, and simply not being ready to play when it’s your turn. It’s easy to get absorbed in your own game, but forgetting about the groups ahead and behind can quickly lead to bottlenecks and delays across the entire course.
The Fix: Step-by-Step Solutions
The good news is that speeding up your game doesn’t mean rushing your shots or sacrificing enjoyment. It’s about efficiency and awareness. Here’s how to cultivate a brisker, more considerate pace:
- Embrace “Ready Golf”: The single most effective way to combat slow play is to embrace Ready Golf. Ready Golf is simple: whoever is ready to hit, hits. If you get to your ball and have your club selected while your playing partner is still debating their options, it’s your turn. This simple change can shave minutes off of each hole.
- Be Ready to Play: As you approach your ball, assess the shot and select your club. Don’t wait until it’s your turn to start your routine. While others are playing, plan your next move.
- Walk with Purpose: Between shots, walk at a good clip.
- Minimize Pre-Shot Rituals: While a consistent routine is vital, lengthy waggles, practice swings, and overthinking can add significant time. Find a routine that’s efficient yet effective.
- Anticipate Your Turn: Know who’s up next. If you’re playing ‘ready golf’ (which is encouraged in casual rounds), be prepared to hit when safe, even if it’s not strictly your turn.
- Watch Everyone’s Ball Flight: Be a good playing partner and watch every shot in your group until the ball stops moving. This simple act can save an incredible amount of time. 4 eyes are better than 2!
- Limit Ball Searching: Most courses have a 3-minute rule for searching for lost balls. Stick to it. If it’s not easily found, drop another ball and move on. Consider playing a provisional ball if there’s any doubt.
- Be Efficient on the Green: Walk directly to your ball, read your putt while others are putting if possible, and be ready to stroke when it’s your turn. Mark your score on the next tee, not on the green.
- Park Smart: If you’re driving or pushing a cart, park it strategically near the next tee or exit point of the green, not directly in front of it, to save steps and time.
